Visual Art
Examples of Student Work
Program Overview:
Students in the Visual Art Program at Jesús Moroles learn about Art History, Art techniques and Art vocabulary. Students use the Davis Digital book that is appropriate for their grade level. Students practice drawing skills by using contour drawing and one-point perspective. Students identify and understand the elements of art, including line, shape, color, texture, form, space, and value, as the fundamentals of art in personal artwork. Students identify and understand the principles of design, including emphasis, repetition/pattern, movement/rhythm, contrast/variety, balance, proportion, and unity, in personal artwork. Students create original artwork to communicate thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Discussions about famous artwork and styles help the students understand and develop their own work. Students are given the opportunity to explore different themes and demonstrate their skills in using various materials. Students explore two-dimensional and three-dimensional work. Materials used in two-dimensional work may include colored pencils, pastels, watercolors, tempera and charcoal drawing pencils, depending on availability. Three-dimensional work may include clay, wire and plaster, if available.
Students are encouraged to maintain a portfolio so that they will have work to show in applying for High school. The portfolio also shows a development of skill and techniques. Students participate in Art Shows on campus and community shows, such as with the Sylvan 30 Group. We collaborated with the artist Drigo in the Wild west Mural Fest and the Oak Cliff Cultural Center. Students are encouraged to participate in various Art Contests.
Ms. Cooper, K-5th Grade Visual Arts Teacher
"My name is Madison Cooper (she/her). I began teaching in 2022 and began teaching at Jesus Moroles in 2023. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art in 2022 at The University of Texas at Austin. In my spare time, I am a practicing artist in mediums such as printmaking and photography. I've had the opportunity to exhibit my artwork in cities such as Chicago, New York, and Austin. Art is an essential part of expression for children, and I want to make that safe space for my students through art."
